Creating a Debate Video

on the  Pros  &  Cons  of Legalizing Marijuana

Brining in the Previously-Ignored Aspects

Page Summary

 09

It's simply not practical to have hundreds of live, in-person debates on this issue.   It is, however, quite practical to create a video:  1) in which all sides are invited to have their say,  2) in which all key issues are thoroughly discussed,  3) in which the commonly-ignored aspects of this controversy (such as the money connections) are openly examined,  4)   in which full, two-sided views are given for each specific aspect of the debate,  and 5) in which the reefer-madness-style statements of the prohibitionist are directly challenged.   That's what we are doing.   We invite your support and your participation.

The video presents the truth, the whole truth, and only the truth regarding marijuana.   It brings in the evidence to debunk the myths about marijuana, and it examines  the evidence (or lack of evidence) in support the claims on both sides.  All sides are invited to have their say.   Full, two-sided views are given for each specific aspect of the debate.   The video brings to the forefront aspects of this controversy that up to now have received little or no attention.

On the marijuana issue, when those of us who support Marijuana Freedom produce a video, moderate the debate, and, ask the key questions, we  have a huge advantage over the opposition.   Why?   For four reasons:

1)   Because we can ask the questions and bring up the aspects of this
        controversy that are commonly ignored.

2)   Because we can press for clarity when the opposition avoids answering a question, or when he or she responds with meaningless statements, or  when the opposition gives answers that are not backed up by the evidence.

3)   Because we can demand that the opposition provide evidence
       to supports their positions.

4)   Because the opposition really has very little real evidence to support
their position.   (See the opposition list  below.)

Video Content

.

We address each aspect of this issue separately.   We ask for and/or provide evidence to support or refute each of the topics listed below.

Here's a partial list of topics:

Does marijuana prohibition:
Create over fifty percent of the world's criminal activity?

Does marijuana prohibition
Finance terrorism?

Does marijuana prohibition:
Stop people from using marijuana?

Is marijuana prohibition:
Responsible for the drug-related violence such as that presently going on in Mexico?

Is it true that:
In the latest round of the anti-drug war in Mexico, over 17,000 people have been murdered

Is marijuana prohibition:
A major contributor the gang violence on our city streets?

Does marijuana prohibition:
Supports a multi-billion-dollar police and prison industry?

Does marijuana prohibition:
Push our political system toward a fascist-style police state

Does marijuana prohibition
Corrupt federal, state, county, and city government officials, not only in other countries, but here is the United States as well?
(Link to Corruption)

Does marijuana prohibition
Dramatically raise the price of marijuana?

Does marijuana prohibition stop its use or does it simply
Push marijuana "sales underground" into the "black market"?

Does marijuana prohibition
Turn production, distribution, and billions of dollars in profits over to criminals

Does marijuana prohibition:
Make criminals wealthy, and give them enough money (more than 150 billion dollars every year just from marijuana) with which to corrupt corporate executives and elected government officials?

Does marijuana prohibition
Completely eliminates product quality and product safety?

Does marijuana prohibition:
Destroy the lives of hundreds of thousand of young adults by making criminals out of otherwise law-abiding people?

Does marijuana prohibition:
Dramatically reduces the tax base
?

Is marijuana prohibition:
A major factor in prohibiting the existence of a multi-billion-dollar hemp industry here in the United States?

Does marijuana prohibition:
Waste billions of dollars of vitally needed tax money?

Is marijuana prohibition:
A major contributor to environmental destruction

Can marijuana use be stopped
by government violence and threat of violence

We will addres  the issue of nonflicts of interest.
Where does money come into this debate?
Are the opponents defending their pay checks

Is it the business of government
to be provide morality police? -- modern morality police with, guns, clubs, tear gas, and jails?   The midlevel times we had morality police.   Do we still need them today

The Prohibitionists make numerous claims about Marijuana.   We'd like to know the truth about these claims, so we'll ask, "What does the evidence tell us?"

Here are some of their anti-marijuana proclamations:

Marijuana is
a stepping stone to heroin, cocaine, and to other extremely harmful drugs?

If marijuana become legal,
it will increase drug use.

If marijuana become legal,
more people will become drug addicts.

Legalizing marijuana
will turn the state [California]  into "the wild west."

Legalizing marijuana
will create more problems.

Legalizing marijuana
will unleash stoned drivers onto our highways.

Legalizing marijuana
would create significant health and safety problems.

Legalizing marijuana
will attract out-of-state crime gangs who'd buy California marijuana for resale on their home turf.

Medical marijuana dispensaries
attract criminals.

By decriminalizing marijuana,
you are promoting its use

Passing Prop 19 will
negatively affect medical marijuana patients and collectives and cause a regulatory nightmare in some local jurisdictions.
(Link to Response

And a few questions of our own:

Can you see that:
It's no longer a question of "will marijuana prohibition will end?"   It's only a question of how soon will it end and how much more destruction we must experience before it ends?

Is there something inherently evil in marijuana
that makes it different from alcohol, nicotine, and the other legal, mind-altering substances?

Is there some reason why the use of marijuana should be treated differently from alcohol and tobacco?

What is the cost of the war on drugs -- the cost in out-of-pocket expenditures -- the cost in lost revenue -- the costs in terms of grief, misery, death and destruction?
What are we getting for all that money?   How could we make more effective use of that money?

What will happen to the crime rate in America
when marijuana becomes legal in every state?

What effect will legalizing marijuana
have on the police and prison industries?

The police are sworn to protect and serve.
When a person is arrested in his own home for possessing marijuana, for his own personal use,  who is being protected and who is being  served?

Quote about the marijuana issue:  Susan Manheimer. police chief, San Mateo, California
"Drug use is damaging to our communities, our youth, and everyone we are sworn to serve and protect."

Which drugs is she talking about  - alcohol, nicotine, the other legal drugs?

Are drugs and marijuana the same thing?

In the context of creating the greatest good for the greatest number in the long run, what is the best way to protect and serve?

What is the most effective and most cost-efficient way to treat drug mis-users -- medically or criminally?

Keeping marijuana illegal produces a cash income of about 150 billion dollars each and every year.
How is that money being laundered and put back into the economy?

Is there a political middle ground --
where politicians who face angry voters on both sides of the marijuana controversy can find a face-saving way out?

What the real issue in the marijuana controversy?
Is it marijuana or is it money?

Is it true that legalization of marijuana
will open the doors to a multi-billion-dollar hemp industry that will revitalize California's family farms by allowing farmers to grow hemp for making cloth and paper and for hundreds of other uses?

When marijuana becomes legal,
who will gain and what will they gain?    Who will lose and what will they lose?

How will the legalization of marijuana
affect the profit margins of the oil companies, the alcohol and tobacco industries and a large number of chemical corporations?

The Debate Context

.

Format:   Each of the above questions is being addressed specifically and individually.   Two moderators, one male one female,  will co-host the debate.   Each moderator will wear a audio ear piece like news reporters commonly do.

We seek the participation of people who have expertise and opinions on either side of each of the topics listed above.

We intend to video tape the individual segments when and where we can and then combine the segments into a single video.

The overall length of the video is yet to be determined.   Segments are designed so that they are stand alone units and so that they are short  enough to appear on Youtube.

We welcome those who have and/or will produce segments that they consider to be appropriate to submit their work to us.   We will consider them for inclusion.

The introductory segment defines the context in which this debate is occurring.

Inviting Marijuana Prohibitionists to the Debate:    We invite marijuana prohibitionists to participate in the debate and bring with them the evidence to support their statements..

At the beginning of each debate that we, ourselves create, all the speakers are asked to place their hand on a Bible and swear to  "Tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth."

Hemp:   Near the end of the discussion, we shift the discussion to hemp and its potential with questions such as:

"Are you aware the hemp could be a multi-billion dollar industry -- an industry that can and will provide hundreds of thousands of safe, well-paying jobs?"

"Are you aware a multi-billion dollar industry would and will provide a multi-billion dollar tax base -- a tax base can and will provide billions of dollars for essential social services such as education and health care?"

"Are you aware that hemp production is legal in 30  nations, -- Canada, Japan, Germany, France, Australia."

Each participant is then asked:  "Do you support the creation of a hemp industry in California similar to what presently exists in Canada?   If so, why?   If not, why not.

Flexibility:   None of this is "carved in stone."   We do and will adapt and adjust as required.

An Examples of

Responding to the Opposition

 09

Responding to Leticia E. Pepper -- "Don't be fooled:  Prop 19 WILL Affect Medical Marijuana Patients and collectives."

Her Reason for opposing Prop 19:   She is concerned about the possible negative effects that proposition 19 could have on medical marijuana patients.   She is passing out fliers and going into great detail about some of the wording on the proposition, itself.

The Response:   In any debate listen to her statement and then immediately respond.

"Thank you for your concern.   You are correct.   Proposition 19 could possibly have some short-term negative effects on medical marijuana users.   You know, Leticia, we worked very hard at making this proposition perfect, but obviously we didn't quite make perfection.   The best we could do was excellence."

The above response eliminates the conflicted, adds a touch of humor, and takes much of the wind out of her sail.   Then ask:

Are you open minded enough to look at this proposition from a long-term, national and international perspective."

She has no choice in responding to your question.  She can only say yes.   Then make the following statement:

"Are you also aware that on the national and international level, the key issue is much bigger than California's medical marijuana patients.   It's about money.   It's about  Profits at Any Price, and it's about political power.   It's about the 250 Billion dollars that the illegal drug and marijuana black market puts into somebody's "pockets" each and every year.   It's about getting rid of corporate mismanagement and dirty politics.   It's about creating Marijuana Freedom.  Are you aware that:

*** Marijuana prohibition finances terrorism,
*** Corrupts federal, state, county, and city government officials,
*** Raises its price dramatically,
*** Pushes marijuana "underground" into the "black market",
***
Turns production, distribution, and billions of dollars
        in profits over to criminals,

Are you aware that marijuana prohibition:
*** Makes criminals wealthy, and gives them enough money
(more than 150 billion dollars every year) with which to
corrupt corporate executives and elected officials,
*** Completely eliminates product quality and product safety,

Are you aware that marijuana prohibition:
*
** Destroys the lives of hundreds of thousand of young adults
by making criminals out of otherwise law-abiding people,
*** Is responsible for over fifty percent of the world's criminal activity,
*** Causes drug-related violence such as that presently
         going on in Mexico,

In the latest round of the anti-drug war, over 17,000 people
           have been murdered.

Are you aware that marijuana prohibition:
*
**
Is a major contributor the gang violence on our city streets,

*** Supports a multi-billion-dollar police and prison industry,
*** Pushes our political system toward a fascist-style police state,
*** Dramatically reduces the tax base
,

Are you aware that marijuana prohibition:
***
Prohibits the existence of the multi-billion-dollar hemp industry,
*** Wastes billions of dollars of vitally needed tax money,
*** Is a major contributor to environmental destruction,

The passage of Proposition 19 is a major step in permanently eliminating all of these problems.   Now let me ask you a couple of simple question.

Are you aware that no matter what we do some people are going to gain and some are going to lose?

You picked out and are focused on a few who may temporarily experience difficulties, but you are forgetting the bigger picture the context in which Prop 19 is only a small next step in eliminating the entire list of problems I just mentioned.

You are ignoring the thousands that die each year because of marijuana prohibition.

Are you open minded enough to look at this proposition from a long-term, national and international perspective?"

When we place the result of passing Proposition 19 in its global, long term perspective, can you see that passage in a huge positive step toward better care for medical marijuana patients?"

The Bottom line: "Which result is going to have the greatest long-term positive effect --- The passage or the failure of Propositions 19?

Responding to Opposition

in the Print Media

 0

Responding to the Opposition:   Every critical statement requires an immediate response, regardless of where it comes from.   In print media, ask the publication to publish a response to the false statement included in their article about marijuana.   See the "Daily News" article (immediately below) for and example.

Reefer  Madness  Mentality:   The "Reefer Madness" mentality is still being peddled by the prohibition supporters.   As  a result, many people believe that to "legalize marijuana" is to unleashing the devil onto their community and onto their family.   For example, here's a reefer-madness-style quote from  Daily News [los Angeles San Fernando Valley, CA]   September 9, 2010,  Pg A25

"Opponents say Proposition 19 would increase youth drug abuse, unleash stoned drivers on the highways, and attract out-of-state crime gangs who'd buy California marijuana for resale on their home turf."

Statements like this need to be challenged immediately.   First, go the writer of the article and ask him or her who are the opponents to whom you  refer?   Did you contact them?   Where did you get the information you published.   Please give us their names and how to contact them.   We'd like to invite them to part of the Debate Video we are creating on the Marijuana Freedom issue.

Where did you get the idea that the passage of Proposition 19 would increase youth drug abuse?   Are you aware the evidence tells us that regardless of legality, marijuana use stays about the same?

Ask, "Where's the evidence to support the statement that the passage of proposition 19 unleash stoned drivers on the highways?"

Address the issue of  "out-of-state crime gangs who'd buy California marijuana for resale on their home turf."

Response One:  Do you realize what a blessing that will be?   Illegal marijuana growers are spreading toxic chemicals all over California's state and national forests.  The environmental destruction extensive and it's irreversible.   When these same criminals come to California, and buy marijuana legally, the destruction will end.   And the police will have much less reason to fly around the state searching for illegal pot farms.

Response Two:  The out-of-state crime gangs would disappear (as would over half of all crime) by legalizing marijuana in those states also.   Marijuana is NOT the problem.   Prohibition is the problem.   Marijuana scare tactics are the emotional hooks used by the prohibitionists to keep the people fooled and to keep the illegal drug money flowing.

And Present-day Historians Joins the Debate

Abraham Lincoln
Speech in the Illinois house of representatives, Dec, 18, 1840

Prohibition . . . goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes.   A prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principle upon which our government was founded.

Albert Einstein
Speaking about the prohibition of alcohol

"The prestige of government has undoubtedly been lowered considerable by the prohibition law.   For nothing is more destructive of respect for the government and for the law of the land then passing laws which cannot be enforced."

Benjamin Franklin

When Ben Franklin had a major decision to make and there were many factors to consider, he would list the pros and con and then based upon his list, he'd decide which choice to make.

When we make a list of the various pros and cons of marijuana prohibition and then rate each pro and each con with a number form one to ten and then add up the total for each side, the overwhelming choice is to end marijuana prohibition and replace it with Marijuana Freedom.

A Present-day Historian

You have studied the alcohol prohibition era of the 1920's.   Tell us about it and what did we learn form the prohibition of alcohol.   How does any of that relate to the present-day prohibition of marijuana?

.

This is completely and totally a joint effort.   You support and participation is welcomed.  All suggestions and ideas will be considered. We will evaluate all suggestions and then make the required decisions regarding format and content.

corporations, one for-profit and one not-for-profit.
They will function as partners.

  The Corporation:

The for-profit business (Mari-Med Corporation) will be based on The New Corporate World Foundation's Win-Win Business Structure -- a structure in which corporate employees, corporate customers, and the environment hold equal priority with making a profit.   Corporate focus is the production and application of Hemp.

Hemp is an ignored gold mine  because when it is allowed to freely flourish, it will become a multi-billion dollar industry.   For example, hemp it will replace trees as a source of fiber for paper, it's medical benefits are profound, and as plastic for auto bodies, its strength and damage resistance will save billions of dollars in auto repairs.

  The Foundation:

We are creating a medical-marijuana, access-assistance foundation.   The Mari-Med Foundation will provide funding and access to medical marijuana for those in need who cannot, by themselves, afford to pay for the products and services.   The Foundation will own controlling  interest in the Mari-Med Corporation so that the majority of the corporate profits will go to the Foundation.
